Data Center

Excerpts from a Strategic Path infrastructure roundtable: Kevin McIsaac IBRS talks with Data center advisor David Blumanis, APC

It is common for companies to have data scattered over different sites. Massive savings can be achieved by consolidating this data in a single location, especially as much of the data is likely to be duplicated across locations. This case study highlights the experience of the UK Royal Horticultural Society (owner of 200 000 botanical images and related databases) with data consolidation.

Operating data centers at optimal temperatures can present a significant challenge to companies. IT managers often respond to this challenge by implementing overzealous cooling strategies. This can lead to a significant jump in operating costs as well as an increased environmental footprint.

With this thought provoking article Sam Higgins (Research Director for Longhaus) invites us to think outside the box when it comes to data center design and placement.

...one only needs to think 'inclusively'

We grew up seeing mountains of files in the backrooms of our parents offices – an age when we cut trees to make paper and created filing systems that could occupy buildings. Then came the digital age and we continue to fell trees and create complex filing / storage systems in servers which are housed in huge data centers.

Frequent Hard Disk and Motherboard failures leave Data Center Managers employing Power Quality Audits, blaming ESD as the cause, however the actual culprit most of the times is Contamination.

With the burgeoning volume of data in organizations of all sizes there is a critical need for a data storage strategy. An optimum solution will include all aspects such as an effective data center strategy, outsourcing storage partners, incorporating data security measures and selection of storage vendors.
